Scanno, ITA - The Swiss delegation strikes again. After XTERRA Greece, XTERRA Switzerland and the Cross Triathlon World Championships in Den Haag Holland last weekend continued the XTERRA Tour to Scanno Italy.
At the starting line were the newly crowned Pro World Champions Helena Erbonova (CZ) and Conrad Stoltz (RSA), as also numerous top level professionals. The race course was designed by Nicolas Lebrun (FRA) and was filled with plenty highly technical obstacles. The course was a 1.5km swim in the lake of Scanno, 31.5km mountain bike and a 10.4km run. The very technical mountain bike course had 1152m climbing for the races. The run course was from the same kind and the 10.4km had 450m incline on a 33% steep ski slope.
Renata Bucher (SUI) had a great race and took 2nd with only a few seconds behind Helena Erbenova. In the male race was dominated by Conrad Stolz.
I had a good swim and made it 4th out of the water. The bike started immediately with the climb up to the village of Scanno and continued into the valley all the way to the top at 15km. The loop at the very fare end in the valley of stunningly beautiful. The weather was on our side and the entire race was nice and sunny. The downhill was though a little wet from a early rain in the morning. In T2 I lost one glove and after a couple extra second I recovered it. The run started in the same manner as the bike with running to the village of Scanno. There the course went through each and every alley of the town. Then the big surprise, the only section I did not check out the day before was the part between km 4 and 6 - well maybe that was a good plan. There the course went up a 400m long section strait up the hill, which is used in the winter as a ski slope. Only 1 Pro caught me at 8km mark, in the end I took 9th overall and won my age group with a 24min lead. This was my 3rd ticket to the XTERRA World Championships in Maui Hawaii - I am still undecided.
What I do know is that I will be back to this beautiful valley in Scanno next year.
The next stop of the XTERRA Tour is on August 10th in Prachatice in the Czech Republic
