European weekend with ETU European Champs and Xterra Europ Tour finals.
September 7, 2013
One weekend, two races, two countries - make is difficult to pick. My choice was for going to the ETU Cross Triathlon European Championships in Strobl am Wolfgangsee, AUT.
The race was set in the very beautiful valley of the Wolfgangsee and the organization committee created a big triathlon party! I was positively surprised to meet Yann Rithner at the opening ceremony and happy that I was not the only Swiss at the Europeans.
The race start was at 10:00, water temperatures around 20 degrees and the decision was to swim with neoprene. The race was designed with 2 laps swimming (1k), 2 bike laps (22k) and yes 2 laps running (6k). In the first lap I stood in second position, not only to add another 2 to the story, but also to take advantage of water drafting. Short before the water exit the Austrian Will and I overtook the leader and we came in the lead out of T1. Shortly after fixing the shoes Lars Fricke (GER) took the lead and we tried to escape leaving Plappert and Will behind. Both caught up at the first of four uphills and we remained for another lap together. In the fourth uphill Plappert und Fricke accelerated the speed and gaped me by 45sec. When I arrived in T2 I only saw Fricke just leaving his spot and I knew I had to put up a hell of a transition and run to close the gap. Fastest T2 of the day set a good base and after 3km Fricke was only 7sec in front of me. Just before the second lap we approached the penalty box, and Fricke's number was on the board. He unfortunately stepped over the dismount line and had to serve 15sec in the penalty box. This turned now the race putting me 8sec in front of him and I took advantage to accelerate the pace. In the remaining 3km I could open more space on my pursuer and finished 30sec ahead of him.
The overall winner was the only 18 years young Malte Plappert (GER) 20sec ahed of me.
Very impressive achievement of young Malte, putting him on 6th in the Pro race in the afternoon.
Yann Rithner (SUI) finished 17th overall and second in his category, congratulations adding another podium to his season. We had a lot to celebrate that night.
On Sunday in the UK Xterra England tock place, here Steve Ferguson took the win in our category. His second consecutive victory in the Xterra Europe Tour. Looking forward racing Steve in Maui at the XTERRA World Championships in October. In the overall ranking of the European Tour the podium remained unchanged.
