Pre XTERRA World Championships - Maui
October 18, 2013
Arrived last Sunday evening here in Hawaii, a week before the big race. The 2.5 day long flight from Seronera Airport (Tanzania) - Kilimanjaro (Arusha) - Amsterdam - Zürich (bike pick up/ bag exchange) - London - Los Angeles - Kahului (Maui) was very comfortable. Had some good hours of sleep on the last leg, only the lack of movement and 9 airplane meals in a row make me feel not at the top.
Very blessed to stay with the Brown Family in Lahina, only a few miles to the race start and perfect conditions to prepare for the race. Jacqui, Ben, Renata and Jens are also guests of the Brown's and make it very fun. Interesting to see how the Pro's have very different training and preparations schedules, even the nutrition plan could not be more different with each of them.
First impressions of the bike course was soso for me. The uphills are step, many turn, much dust and the heat made it hard for me still being very exhausted and feeling that my body is in a different time zone. The first swim made replenished the energy level. Fleming beach is stunning beautiful and the water crystal clear to the ground - very very far out. The second time on the bike course this twisty and turny course starts to become more fun and I must say I like it better and better. Still the uphills in the plain sun are super hot and this will be not easy to mange to keep cool in the race. The heat will play a role in the race and hydration + food intake will be key. The best part is still the beach - playing in the waves makes a big kid very happy. Finally the run, with the uphill in 4 parts up to the small pond will ask all remaining energy, once at the pond the fun starts running down again thorough the cut-out channels in the bush and forest. I hope the 2 days walk down from Kilimanjaro will have its benefits in this section of the race. The last 1.5 miles two more challenges are to come; at the last aid-station there is a super steep uphill on a paved road (very hot) and in the last kilometer there is Fleming Beach to cross, maybe by that time the appropriate name will be "Flaming beach"?
Wish all the competitors a great race here and I can't wait to get started now.
Thank you Jens Buder & Renata for the great support and images.
Now praying from some big waves on Sunday morning - let it storm - please!!!
