Duathlon du Valais - another time second
April 27, 2015
The second edition of the cross duathlon du Valais had some changes. The run was longer and harder and so was the bike. Still a very funky mix of distances with a 10km run, 9km bike and another 10km run. Also the altitude gain was added and a total of 820m was up to be ran und biked.
The weather forecast was not the best, but we got lucky that it stayed overcast and dry. The start was again flat for 3km and with this the tempo was high. I decided to stay with the leader, but do not take the lead so I can save some energy for latter in the race. The first uphill with 300m was hard and steep. Unfortunately I could feel my injury from Malta again and I tried to adapt as much as I could to not increase the pain. At 5km there Yvan and Deni were only 50m ahead of me and setting the pace. In the following downhill I closed the gap again and we arrived all together in the transition. Leaving in the lead the transition I went back to my initial strategy to stay with the lead, but do not lead. In the long uphill Yvan lost contact on the Deni and me and we started to open the gap more and more. In the
downhill we caught up to the one team race ahead of us and again I could lead into transition for the final run.
On the flat I could feel that Deni was tired and had problems to hold the pace, and I tried to play my card. Again in the uphill he was stronger and my injury was now asking its tribute. The pain level started going up and things were not smooth any longer. The final downhill was no fun anymore, but I was very happy to defend my second place to the finish line. Congrats Deni for the victory and a big thank you to the organisation team, the race was a lot of fun!
A second time second is ok. Last year I was second and had a great season, so I take this as a good omen for the upcoming season.
