XTERRA Sweden Championships - sooo close
July 12, 2015
Stockholm, The second annual XTERRA Sweden Championships took again place in Hellasgården and become a race for only 20sec between first and third! The racecourse was exactly the same as in the year before and with 1.5km swim, 30km bike and 10km run a nice change to the over distance races earlier this year. Big difference to the previous year was the weather, this year a lot colder and in the days leading to the race a lot of rain. The rain turned the last few kilometres of the bike loop into a mud bath already on the training days. The pro field was as usually stacked with some big names on the tour. Sam Osborne (NZL), Kris Coddens (BEL), Jan Kubicek (CZ), Jonas Djurback (SWE) and Lars Erik-Fricke (GER) are just some to mention.

The race started with a nice surprise of sunshine and good visibility. Leading to the first bouy Sam set the pace very high and Jonas in his legs. I followed around the 400m turn and then had to let them go. Lars was on my legs and I tried to get rid of him. after 750m and the Australian exit the gap was about 40sec on Sam and Jonas. After the next 750m the gap grew to about 80sec. In T1 I slipped on the mat into transition and saw that Lars was still on my feet. With a quick transition I caught up to Jonas at 2km on the bike and tried to pass him. From there I rode hard to make a gap on Jonas and chasing Sam.
All went well in the technical, rocky and road section, but the mud section was not my thing. Kris caught up and passed me, riding super hard. In the second loop I saw Kris standing and preparing his front tire. The second loop was a repletion of the first, Kris repeating me in the mud, and Jonas closing the gap. In T2 I change quick and left Jonas behind. Kris about 30-40sec ahead. Sam was about 90sec fare away leading the race. The first 3km I ran very hard and closed the gap to Kris. From there on he stayed on my feet and we kept the tempo very high. Some spectators giving us the gap to Sam and it was a mental game hearing 80sec, 90sec, 40sec in a mix. At 8km into the run the race got very interesting as we caught up to Sam. What a look on his face when he saw Kris and me only 15m behind him. He upped the speed to the maximum and I tried to follow.
Kris got gapped and made it my a very adventures jump over a fallen tree back to me. On the last 500m the sprint over the last hill started and Kris passed me on the last possibility before going into the last single trail. The finish was full speed and all the pros going down passed the finish line. Congrats to Sam taking the victory in 2:31:45, Kris second in 2:32:00 and I followed 7sec later. It was sooooo close - next time!
Big thank you to Pål, Peter,Micke, the many vaulters and sponsors for their great work creating such a nice race in beautiful Sweden!
