Vertical up Wengen - hard, very hard
March 21, 2016
What a race this was. I have not done many 5k races where I have been almost passing out during the run and was close to hyper ventilation when walking. The vertical up in Wengen brought me to my limits. The course was set on the famous ski world cup downhill course, but this time up. So the finish arena became the start and the start-bar on top of the Lauberhorn became the finish line. The rules for the race are simple, you can only use your own muscle power and the gear is free, so you can come with running shoes, snow shoes or skis with skins. Who ever is first on the top wins.

For me I chose running shoes with crampons, in my training runs I had a good feeling about this option, always a good grip and the added weight with the crampons was not too bad. To support the speed in the steep uphills I also took very light walking sticks.
The races starts with its first 41 grade hill and there is worse coming later on. At 1.5km I realised that the top 5 guys were much stronger then me. Some of them looked like mountaineering guys and others were clearly runners. All of the top ten guys wore track shoes with very long nails, some of them had walking sticks and some ran it simply up. Half way into the race my crampons became very heavy and I started paying the toll for the extra added weight. The Hundschopf section went ok and I only had minor slips in it, but my force was gone.
Here the race course in the other way - in our case the wrong one :) with Didier Cuche
At the end I got 12th in this very special experience. Next year I will be back with track shoes and I will train more the super steep sections.
