Xterra Malta - need to come back
April 4, 2016
It seams like there is something against me and keeping me off to ever reach the run course during the Xterra Malta. The days previous the race were great. The island has lot to offer and the outdoors are stunning beautiful. Many historic sites are close by the race course and a greater part of the race takes place on ancient roads and paths. My travel to the island with Air Malta was very easy from Zürich and traveling with a bike makes this airline a good choice since they have a baggage allowance of 23kg, just enough for all the gear and with this a great carrier choice.
The race day then unfolded a bit different as planed...again I had a ok swim, worked my way up on the bike, even making it into the podium spots and then….
...well this time it was due to 2 flats stopping me in the second lap, to abandon the race.
I leave with a good and a bad feeling from. Knowing I am doing well in training and this early in the season and I am on course for the summer. But not finishing again was hard. Luckily no injury like last year, just a tire that will go to trash and a major bike rebuild to get everything to race condition again.
Thank you to the organisation and volunteers! This small Xterra is a jewel and Malta is an island to be discovered. Some trail running has brought me to places I was absolutely stunned by how beautiful they are. The time of the year with the blooming flowers and fresh air also make the training on Malta very pleasant. I will be back a third time and this time please no nr. 13 and no bad luck any more.
