Xterra Greece - no legs no glory
May 9, 2016
The Xterra Greece race was moved from the already beautiful setting from Lake Plastina to the beaches south of Athens. This stunning location at Vouliagmeni, this beach was in the year 2000 the setting for the Olympic Triathlon race and since then never used again for a Triathlon event. Very cool that we got to reuse the transition area of the Olympic race and start in a very stacked race of professional Xterra athletes.
The swim in the crystal clear water into the rising sun was just a dream - I love ocean swims and this one was in the category of Maui or Sardegna in terms of clear water and scenery! The race started fast and soon I was swimming just behind the lead pack of 5 and holding on there. In T1 I was happy to see that I in the middle of the top mountain bikes with Francois and Ruben and together we went on the 2 lap course. The speed was high and Thomas and I started working together. Later Kris and Arthure joined and for a while we did some good progress in a pack of 4. Into the second lap Thomas took his time on the stairs crying his bike up and that was the point where our group of 4 spilt up in 2 groups of 2. In the following hunt I burned too much energy and latter on the run I would pay for this mistake.
The run had 2 good climbs in it that we had to do twice for the 2 laps. The uphill was exactly what I was training for the last few weeks and each time I could close the gap to Thomas running just a few meters ahead of me. The downhills were not my thing. My legs were not ready to run this fast down after 2hrs and at 8km it happened. I started to feel that I was cramping and boom it was game over. Running in 6th was cool, but 2min later I was running in 10th and the guys passing were all flying. Well this is racing and the guys on this level are all strong. Congrats to Roger winning his first major race and beating Ruben - not many people had this honour up to now beating the machine! I will be back to this beautiful and very fun new race. Thank you to the city and people of Vouliagmeni for having us - you created a great event here!
