ETU Cross Triathlon European Championships

Vallé de Joux - Back in the Valley of rain and mud and this year was no different. The weather forecast was promising, but the race turned out to be a mud fest. This year special was that in the XTERRA race it was also the ETU European Championships integrated. Not an optimal solution since many non Europeans are racing in the European Cup for points and the European Champs should be exclusive to continentals only. The decision was made that all pros start together and that it would be a messy race.
I had a good start, but then at 300m everything turned. Something I did not have in years happened and I panicked in the middle of the swim group. I think it was a combination of the national team dress and wetsuit being both very tight and constraining me a bit that I started to breath to quick and one lead to the next. So I ended up swimming 200m backstroke and getting handed back in the middle of the pack, to find me in 30th position out of the water.
The muddy conditions on the bike suited me well - this forced a lot of riders to ride slower to stay on their bikes and I could make up a lot of spots with Bradley Weiss. 5km into the Bike he crashed directly in front of me and I had to take a split second decision to either ride over his back wheel or also take a fall. I took the fall and managed not to land on him completely. In the following kilometres I made my way into the top 15th.
The run was as usually flat and fast. The new uphill added some spice to it and some racers paid their tribute for going to hard on the bike in the second loop of the run. Here again I caught one after the other and at the end I was 10th.
Thank you for an other mud fest in Switzerland - see you next year again.
