Golden Bay - This is my third attempt in this crazy race. In the previous years I had only bad luck here. 2 years ago I had a very bad crash at the end of the first lap of the bike that forced me to abandon. Last year I had no crash, but such a brocken valve that was impossible for me to repair and I pushed my bike 6km back home. This year I was determined to make it to the finish. I have never raced before with a repair kit, a pump, foam and a spare tire - all this gear to make sure to finish that bike course.
The bike course was redesigned this year, now with even more roman roads and lava gravel sections then previously, even more possibilities to get a flat…or any other technical issue.
As in the previous year the swim was a bliss in the days before. Beautifully clear blue water and then on the race day clouds and this wind.
The swim was again lead by Roger that kept the pace very high from the start on and quickly the pros were split into multiple groups. I made it into the second together with Jim and Francois. On the first few kilometres I could see Hannes and Maxim working hard just a few second ahead of us. Roger and Maximilian where even further ahead and out of sight. Only Francois could make with a big effort some time up on them. Jim and I paced hard and caught up on Hannes with a defect and Maxim with other problems. Just before T2 Jörg came flying by from behind and always just ahead of me was Thomas. In T2 I changed into my shoes on 6th place and Jörg and Thomas just ahead of me.
I could tell on the first lap that both struggled with the hills going up, and even more going down. So I waited for making my move at 8km on the longer downhill. Thomas was first already on the last uphill, he worked hard, but I had better legs that day. Then I caught up on Jörg and I knew I can gap him on the technical downhill. My plan worked and I could run hard on the last 2km to the finish in 4th place.
