Tarragona - The home of Roger and with this a lot of pressure to find exceptional bike trails, the secret why he swims so fast and reason why cooking with him is so fun. I had the chance to find a lot of answers in the past week with the highlight of racing the Xterra Spain.
The food research started well and Roger showed me some of his highlights in town, and yes I enjoyed it a lot. The following day the trails did not disappoint me either. The course for the race was just a joy, technical downhill and some steep SOB uphills. I started to use a wide variety for Roger and other names on some of them.
For me it is always a joy to swim open water, and by now it is known that I like it rough. The worse the swimming conditions are, the more fun I have. High waves, currents, wind are my favourites. Add some crystal clear water and you make me a very happy man. In Tarragon the water was great, the waves occasionally high enough to do some bodysurfing, so a nice mix for me.
Race day started with the logistics puzzle. The always difficult two transition location game was the case here. Beach swim then a 4km ride to the forest and 2 laps of 15km bike, followed by a 9.5km very difficult trail run was on the menu.
The first thing to do was placing the shoes in the forest transition. Thanks to Ruben for the ride in the morning! After this was done the ride with the rest of the gear to the start down on the beach was next. Everything ready and I was determined to do a better swim then in Greece I started the race. First lap of two in the water when well, as expected Jens killed it and was fare ahead of us. I took my spot in the middle of the first group and stayed with Ruben, Max, Peter and Arthure. Together we reached after the second lap T1 and Ruben charged first out. I just missed Max and had to work hard on the first 3km to stay just 20m behind them. We averaged over 40km/h speed on the flat, and according to Jens 360 Watts for the first 15min. Once we reached to forest a packe formed with Max, Arthur, Peter and myself, just Ruben 20sec and Jens 2min ahead! The first lap went great and I played my cards smart, easy work up and somewhat crazy speed down to keep the boys busy. With this I stayed always between 3rd and 5th place and felt good. In T2 only Max, Arthur remained in our little group.
Peter had bad luck with a crash and latter a flat. Xavi caught us on the second lap and was just flying. I knew we would not see him again and that it is a race for place 4 to 6 for us. I unfortunately started to have salt issues very early on in the run and at 6km it was game over when I could not stretch my legs anymore without risking to cramp up. Form there is was a getting caught game and letting the athletes pass by without fighting. In the end I ended up on the 10th place - not what I was hoping for but 33 points in the Cup on my account and a lot of fun in the bag.
Thank you Roger for the great day in your home and making us do some sick shit!
